YES!! you made a difference in my life
Victim: Honour Mak
I choose Honour to be my first victim because she was the first one that made me realize the value of friendship. I met Honour at BBPS, standard 4, she was a new student in our class who came at around August 1996 (and i arrived in NZ the nov the year before). At that time I only had one friend, Diana, so i thought, why not make it 2, besides i was kind of happy that i could help some "new student" out (but it turned out that her english was way better than my crappy one, and she probabily helped me out more than i helped her). Anyway we became really good friends. Friends in primary meant... "playing buddies" and that's what she was to me at the beginning, someone to run around in the playground, someone to make paper dolls with.
BBPS at the time unlike other primary schools, it has experienced very little Asian invasion, the only "mandarin speaking" person in our year level apart from me was Hsuan... and he was a weird dude at the time ....very weird, and other asians were all from Hong Kong (i won't mention names) It happened towards the end of the year. When Honour and I started hanging out with the other "Hong Kong" ppl, and they almost always communicate in their own language. At the time, this was really really frustration to me, i mean... i only just managed to comprehend about 60% of English, and there they goes babbling in an unknown langauge. I rememeber running off several times crying because of it, and Honour always followed. She could've stayed, she understood their language perfectly well, but she didn't, she choose to stay by my side. That's when i realize, what true friends are like, and that's when I realized she was truely my best friend.
Over the years, our friendship faded due to distance, but i've seen Honour grew into a confident, hyperactive, optimistic girl who always stood in the side of justice and willing to help out a friend. She may not be the same girl that used to run around with me in the play ground, but i know, whenever her friends is in need, she will stood beside them, just like how she stood beside me that day.
HONOUR!! YES, YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE IN MY LIFE! Honour, thank you for being such a great friend to me, your friendship meant so much to me, and i hope that although we live great distance apart, we'll still keep in touch.
NB: For those ppl who ever wondered why i never spoke mandarin at school, it's because of that incident. After that i vowed not to make anyway suffered the frustration as i did that day. Though i must admit, through the years, i had become a habit that i spoke english to all of my friends despite of presense of any non-mandarin speakers"
